In 1891 Coorado got serious about protecting big game. The new Game and Fish Warden and his deputies went after both encroaching Ute hunters and white poachers. For Forty years, Colorado game wardens waged an unpopular war, sometimes a shooting war on those pushing the remaining elk, pronghorn and deer into extinciton.
